Ben in his prime

November 23, 2020 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Happy birthday, Ben!

Something about 11 seems older. You learned about prime numbers not too long ago, and now here you are, PRIME. I’m sure you just rolled your eyes at me, but I know deep down you like my cheesy jokes. Regardless, my bad jokes are better than the ones you made up for years. I’m glad to be out of that season with you!

You love to make people laugh. I know sometimes I get annoyed because your timing is off (hello, bedtime), but I do see your humor and love of people as a gift you give. You always want to know what we’re doing next, not wanting to miss out on anything. When I pick you up in the afternoon, you’re always the first to ask about my day and what we’re having for dinner. Of course, then you prep yourself to eat enough dinner that you usually don’t care about so you can get ice cream afterward.

I can’t figure out how you usually win Skyjo, Trash Pandas, and Exploding Kittens – all card games that involve some strategy and a lot of luck. It’s true, though, you’re the lucky one. Of course, I’m the lucky one too because even if you beat me in card games, I get to be your mom.

You’ve always liked to be on the move, now that happens on the soccer field, basketball court, hover board, or four-wheeler. You can spend hours searching for treasures around our pond, in the creek, or I the woods. You’re quick to invite someone to join you, wrestle your little sister, and want to watch a science experiment video.

You’ve challenged me more than the girls, but I’ve learned so much about myself and the world through you. I’m my best when I’m carefree and spontaneous like you. I enjoy the world more when I’m not afraid to take things apart, make my own way, and ask questions like you. I’m thankful you’ll still snuggle me, eventually tell me what you’re feeling, and want to live with me forever.

We celebrated your birthday with a few school friends yesterday and homemade breakfast tacos this morning. While making s’mores yesterday, you roasted one so much it caught on fire and we sang “Happy Birthday” to you while you blew it out. Truly, that fit you perfectly. The celebrations are continuing. You chose tonight’s dinner: chicken fajitas and baked potatoes. Plus we are taking a Dairy Queen ice cream cake to Thanksgiving with one side of the family and having another small party next weekend with the other side of the family. We’re spreading out the birthday love because 2020 is a weird year, but everybody still wants to celebrate you, my boy.

I love you, Momma.

reading & schooling at home

April 29, 2020 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Ben had to write a book review for his fourth-grade language arts class, which, you know, he’s doing from our kitchen countertop during these social-distancing days. He just finished reading “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” so that’s what he decided to review. I bribed him to let me share his review here. There are some story spoilers ahead.

*****

In this book, the main character is Harry Potter. His parents were wizards. Voldemort killed his parents. Harry Potter goes to Hogwarts. Hogwarts is a school for wizards. He meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, the other main characters.

He is trying to become a wizard. Then he hears about Voldemort and he is trying to get the sorcerer’s stone. Harry thought Snape was working with Voldemort, but he isn’t. It is actually Professor Quirrell and Voldemort’s face is the back of Quirrell’s head.

The book ends when the school year ends. At the end of each school year, there is a house cup. Whoever has the most points wins.

I liked the book because there are magical creatures like a centaur and a three-headed dog. I liked it because it had a little mystery in it.

*****

Ben isn’t the first Harry Potter fan around here. Cate was quite obsessed with the series for a long time and has read all the books multiple times. Perhaps her brother will join her fan club. Of course, she previously wrote a review too. I haven’t read or watched any Harry Potter story, but I was super impressed with the wizardry world at Universal Studios. Find other books my kids have loved here.

Ben is ten!

November 23, 2019 by Kristin 2 Comments

Dear Ben,

I can’t believe you’re ten. I know, what a cliché to come from a mom’s mouth. But it’s true. I can recount so many details of this past decade with you. Honestly, I think I’ve grown up with you. I thought I knew things when we welcomed you into our family, but, goodness, I’ve learned and grown so much since then — and much of that is because of you.

Sometimes I get caught up in how different we are. You’re loud and like repetitive noises. You’re a morning person, but at least you still like to cuddle. You’re messy and disorganized. And you’re definitely not into the pictures I always want to take! (I convinced you to pose in front of the 9 3/4 platform sign at Universal’s Hogwarts Express because that was about your age then!)

But then I am reminded when I am my best self, I’m a lot like you. We like adventures and road trips and being with our people. We like roller coasters and eating chicken wings.

This year has been hard for me as a person and that’s certainly spilled over into motherhood. While I’ve been processing grief and trying to improve myself for you and your sisters, you’ve been growing in your own ways. Your pants keep getting shorter, your mind is quicker and more aware, and your emotions are at the forefront. We’ve had some hard conversations, meaningful moments, and fun adventures. I’m thankful you’ve been near this year. And I’m thankful I’ve gotten to be near you as you walk through some emotional, physical, and social changes of your own that haven’t exactly been easy.

We are better people together.

After spending every winter of your little life going to college basketball games, watching Ja Morant get drafted after his sophomore year at Murray State and having a stellar beginning to the Grizzlies season is what it took to make you into a true fan this year. You follow the teams more closely now and want to know scores and stats. We’re celebrating with a basketball-themed party this weekend. You’re getting ready to begin your second year of playing basketball of your own at our sweet, small school. You’re still into running club and soccer too.

Thankfully, you’ve found ways to love your big sister, who definitely loves and feels loved in different ways from you. Your little sister loves to laugh with (and at) you when y’all aren’t wrestling. You’re meant to be sandwiched between them and I love being reminded God built our family in ways I couldn’t have predicted.

You’re loyal and brave. You’re fun and funny. You’re curious and kind. And I’m certainly thankful you’re my son.

Happy birthday, Ben! Here’s to the second decade of your life and all the ways I’m sure you’ll surprise me.

Love,
Momma

Seven weeks after quadruple bypass heart surgery, Seven weeks after quadruple bypass heart surgery, my mother-in-law moved home today. We were happy to care for her and we are thrilled she’s doing so well.

I knew she was faithful and strong before, but watching her recovery from open heart surgery convinced me even more of her steadfastness and courage.

Often I don’t want the weekend to end or the sea Often I don’t want the weekend to end or the season to change, but I’m looking forward to Monday after three weeks of quarantine and sickness then snow. I’m looking forward to the snow melting away and eager for spring to bloom.

I’m grateful for health and family and home and a fresh start. A walk through the melting snow with the sun shining and temperatures in the 50s was a sweet spot today. So was gathering with friends we hadn’t seen in too long after church.

Just a few days ago I felt defeated and weary. Now I’m feeling ready and hopeful. Transitions can be rough, but ultimately I’m thankful for new mercies and new seasons.

I'm glad I was able to contribute to "Songs of Hop I'm glad I was able to contribute to "Songs of Hope (Vol. 2)", which was compiled by fellow writers @kerilynnsnyder & @sarah_e_frazer. This devotional spends 31 days in the Psalms.

I share about Psalm 68 and how God built a sanctuary for me at our house in the country and how I want to share that with others. I end the devotional with these questions and a prayer:

I ended 2020 saying it had been a weird year, but, I ended 2020 saying it had been a weird year, but, truthfully, the first six weeks of 2021 have been weird too. Weird seems like a weak word, but I can’t think of another. These past six weeks haven’t been bad, have included plenty of great moments, and shifted so many things in our house. Through it all, my best friend Jaclyn and I haven’t gotten to hang out much.

I’m thankful Greg picked up her and her girls in his four-wheel drive truck yesterday after his short day at the office. We bundled up for some time outside, the kids had legit snow cones, we combined food to make dinner, and various people played various games. Jaclyn and her girls went back to their house this morning, but we are all thankful for old friends & new memories.
