Abel in the Stable

November 26, 2021 by Kristin Leave a Comment

My favorite Christmas traditions are the ones that are focused on Jesus. Maybe that sounds simple, but this world is so loud and the main message often gets lost. I love Abel in the Stable because this simple tradition helps young children discover the truth that Jesus is the reason for the season.

Abel in the Stable was created several years by my friends Shelley Crowell and Abbey Kelly who are the kids and preschool directors at my church. They revamped it this year and I was fortunate enough to offer some editing and brainstorming about the project.

The Abel in the Stable set includes a guidebook for parents, a storybook for kids, a do-it-yourself stable, and a stuffed donkey. While the devotions and activities incorporate Christmas elements beyond the Bible, such as Christmas music, marshmallows, and canned goods, the point is the earthly birth of our lord and savior. The 25 devotions are brief and activities simple so this would be a meaningful addition to an already busy season. It works well to start on Dec. 1 and finish on Christmas morning.

Yes, this tradition is geared toward elementary-aged kids helping Abel discover the true meaning of Christmas, but it’s a great way to have the whole family involved. It’s likely to prompt conversations and create memories.

The Abel in the Stable kits are $20 and can be shipped for an additional $10. Local purchases can be picked up at Hardin Baptist Church. All proceeds go to the church’s outreach ministries. You can order it online at abelinthestable.com. The kit I have doesn’t include the new stuffed Abel, which has been delayed shipping for distribution, but Abbey and Shelley are doing everything they can to make sure families have the new and improved Abel in their hands as soon as they can.

Nobody asked me to review this product. I’m just excited to share it with y’all. I did get a free kit for helping edit the books. These opinions are 100 percent my own and not compensated.

The Wonder of Creation

November 22, 2021 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Our family has been busy, busier than I’d like, really, so I’ve been trying to make the most of our time together. That means sometimes we eat dinner at a fast food restaurant instead of our kitchen table or read a devotional on the way to school rather than sitting perfectly still first thing in the morning together.

I’ve always found lessons in faith right in my everyday life and I want the same for my kids. We’ve been reading “Roar Like A Lion” by Levi Lusko on the way to school most mornings. When we are finished with that one, we’re moving on to “The Wonder of Creation” by Louie Giglio. My sixth-grader Ben and kindergartener Rachel will especially love all the facts and information about animals, planets, and the world around us, but I know my high school freshman Cate and I will benefit from hearing the truth too.

I’m thankful for books like “The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions About God & Science” that have a solid scripture foundation, keep my kids’ interest, and prompt discussions about our actual lives. Louie Giglio does a good job creating a book that does that for us!

About the book

In this captivating follow-up to the bestselling kids’ devotionals “Indescribable” and “How Great Is Our God,” discover more mind-blowing, faith-building scientific facts and biblical truths about the wonder of God’s creation from author, speaker, and founder of the Passion movement Louie Giglio. It’s fine if your family hasn’t read the other devotionals as this one stands on its own with 100 devotionals.

Giglio wants kids to notice, enjoy, and marvel at God’s creation. In “The Wonder of Creation,” children will find new delight in God’s creativity with devotions that explore animals from honeyguide birds to flying snakes to white rhinos; space including black holes to volcanic moons to gamma-ray bursts; people from optical illusions to brain freezes to our immune systems; and Earth from rainbow rivers to blue lava to flowing glaciers

With engaging illustrations and striking photography, this fun and informative book is ideal for children ages 6 to 10. Each of the devotions features a scientific fact or an easy activity for exploring faith, a short Bible verse, and a closing prayer. This book is ideal for science-loving kids, Bible-loving kids, and any child ready to go deeper in faith; continues a well-loved devotional series that has impacted over a million children, parents, and teachers; includes informative content call-outs inviting kids to “Explore the Wonder”; and makes a great addition to a homeschool STEM curriculum or a bedtime reading routine.

This 208-page hardcover devotional is published by Thomas Nelson (Nov. 16, 2021).

Louie is the national-bestselling author of more than a dozen books. An Atlanta native and graduate of Georgia State University, Louie has done post-graduate work at Baylor University and holds a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Louie and his wife Shelley make their home in Atlanta.

Co-author Tama Fortner is an ECPA award-winning and bestselling writer with more than forty titles to her credit. She has collaborated with some of the biggest names in Christian publishing to create inspirational books for both children and teens, as well as adults, including the wildly successful Indescribable Kids series and Jesus Calling for Kids series. But her greatest accomplishments happen in a happy little home on the outskirts of Nashville, where she lives with her family and an incredibly lazy dog, who doubles as a footwarmer.

About the illustrator

After many years working in the design industry, she now crafts imaginary worlds from her home studio, AndoTwin Studio, in Manchester, UK. During this time, she has worked with an eclectic range of clients and has loved every minute!

Rachel really wanted a picture of the book with the cats – more evidence of God’s creation!

Tacos for Two

October 18, 2021 by Kristin Leave a Comment

I don’t sit still without working on something very well, which is probably why I love reading fiction books. The stories are an escape from the to-do list, all the things on my mind, and whatever obligations are before me.

I started “Tacos for Two” and then several days passed before I could get back to it. I was eager to get back to it because the story was good even if it was fairly predictable. I loved the premise of a girl who couldn’t cook owning a food truck and then giving cooking lessons to the boy who becomes her competition and love interest.

Plus the characters quote “You’ve Got Mail” in their online chatting, having no idea how their story will unfold quite like Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox. (Side note: When I started blogging forever ago, my blog was called 152 Insights to My Soul, taken from a line also from “You’ve Got Mail.”)

“Tacos for Two” is a cute story with heart and humor. This book was good for me to sit down with, giving me a great excuse to ignore all the other tasks I could have been doing.

About the book

“Tacos for Two” is a 384-page paperback book published by Revell (Oct. 12, 2021). It’s also available in hardback and ebook versions.

About the author

Betsy St. Amant is the author of more than 15 inspirational romances. She lives in north Louisiana with her husband, two daughters, a collection of Austen novels, and an impressive stash of pickle-flavored Pringles. When she’s not composing her next book or trying to prove unicorns are real, Betsy can usually be found somewhere in the vicinity of a white chocolate mocha, no whip. We’ve taken our older kids on short-term mission We’ve taken our older kids on short-term mission trips and hope to go on more. They’ve served locally. We support missionaries. We want our kids to be open to wherever God calls them and incorporating missions into our small-town life is one way we, as parents, have hoped to teach that.

I’m incredibly thankful @hardinbaptistchurch comes alongside us with the same message. The middle and high school @hardinstudents spent the summer looking at different aspects of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20. Youth minister @cbright2 spent the last Sunday of the series looking at nine practical ways that students – yes, even middle and high schoolers – could participate in and pray about going for God.

Chase shared these 9 Ways to Go with students' parents, and I asked him for permission to share them with you because even as an adult I want to remember to live on mission – even right where I am.

“Writing is what makes me happy. Writing, even, “Writing is what makes me happy. Writing, even, is how I feel I contribute to the world. Reminding people of what’s important. Letting them escape the harsh parts of life, even if it’s just for a few hours. Helping them feel happiness through watching happily-ever-afters unfold. Remembering truths. Recalling their self-worth. Loving others. Living well. Learning. I want to do that.”

And, let’s be honest, love stories about writers make me happy too. “Meet Me in the Margins” was cute, predictable, and a good way to escape for a little while.

This is the only picture I took tonight. You can’t tell, but there was a porch full of people talking, more kids playing basketball, and another group around the kitchen table. We covered a lot of ground in our conversations. Nobody cared that I didn’t have hot dog buns or tomatoes for the burgers. I ran out of paper plates and am happy to hear the dishwasher cleaning all the “real” plates. I’m grateful for come-as-you-are community, where we share real life.

I’m getting ready to get in my van again to pick I’m getting ready to get in my van again to pick up a kid from basketball camp. It’s the third time today I will have driven from my house to somewhere else and back again. And this is still Summer Break, when things are supposedly a little slower.

My friend @marycarver gets me. She knows us moms spend a million hours a week taxiing people to school and sports and church and friends’ houses and errands and appointments. And maybe we linger longer before coming in the house with arms full of groceries and bags and papers and books … because we just need a minute. Or maybe we answer some texts before we pull away from the store and catch up on phone calls while we drive or show up early to pickup to read a book that has captured our attention.

We spend a lot of time and accomplish much in our cars. Mary knows this and is giving us the encouragement we need in her new book, “Prayers from the Parking Lot.” It’s a perfect size to keep in your car or purse. Each of the 50 reflections are practical and inspiring and meet moms on the go right where we are.

Preorder this gem now so you have it the next time you have a few extra minutes in a parking lot, school pickup line, or waiting room. It officially releases next week and is available from @revellbooks on Amazon and wherever else you buy books.

20 years married. 💛 I’ve learned a million t 20 years married. 💛

I’ve learned a million things in these adult years, but I keep thinking about this one this today: Celebrate the good things.

This world is so noisy, decisions and situations clutter our brains, and there’s so much heartache. But there’s also goodness. And our married life falls into that category and is a testimony to God’s faithfulness. It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been sanctifying and life-giving.

(And it deserves a second post today.)

We celebrated today with a lunch date, some love notes, the two bouquets he surprised me with a day early, some chocolates I left in the car too long but rescued and restored them from their melted state, and dinner out as a family. I’ll take it. I will take every ounce of goodness on an ordinary day that marks what feels like a big-deal accomplishment.

With that, happy 20th anniversary, husband. I’m glad we can still learn things about each other after knowing each other for more than 24 years and being married for two decades.

Being in our 40s celebrating 20 years of marriage together seems like such a grown-up accomplishment. But it also seems like exactly where we are supposed to be. Let’s keep adventuring and learning together. Let’s go celebrate, maybe with tacos!
