Songs of Light

When fellow author Sarah Frazer approached me about being part of her Songs of Light project, I loved the idea immediately. Written by 21 different women, this devotional will encourage readers to shine a light in the darkness.

My family walked through a hard situation last year that isn’t entirely my story to tell, but I’ve alluded to the very difficult eighth-grade year my son experienced. Sarah’s invitation to be part of this project came at the right time for me, a time I recognized the value of inviting others into the light through God’s word.

The devotion I have included is about Psalm 136. The same refrain is repeated 26 times in this 27-verse Psalm. The ESV uses “steadfast love” in the repeating phrase, but other translations use other synonyms: love (NIV), faithful love (NLT and CSB), mercy (NKJV), and faithfulness (NASB). They all come from the original Hebrew word “hesed,” which relates to God’s loyalty to His covenant with love and mercy.

Psalm 136 was part of the Israelites’ liturgy response to the Levites leading congregations in worship. I can hear the Levites singing the first line and the commoners responding with the second repeating line. The same line was sung daily as part of the morning and evening sacrifices (1 Chronicles 16:37-41). The Israelites knew God’s faithfulness as a promise keeper, deliverer, and provider despite their whininess and insecurities in the wilderness.

And it’s a truth worth repeating today: His steadfast love still endures forever.

Yes, I have a devotional included, but I really love the whole idea of this project and see how it is an important message for so many people.
