God unites families for His glory

November 28, 2018 by Kristin 8 Comments

My new friendship with Michaela Stanton is one of the sweetest gifts from our trip to Washington, D.C., in September. She tells the story of us meeting in her post, but our time together as part of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Angels in Adoption program was just the beginning of God uniting our shared passions for advocating for adoptive and foster families. Our families have some shared birthdays, like to do some of the same things, and have plans in the year to come.

Please welcome Michaela to the porch today as she shares a piece of her family’s story as National Adoption Awareness Month closes.

*****

I woke the morning of Nov. 21, 2017, in Ethiopia, hopeful yet anxious. I’ll never forget the scripture on my mind on the day I got to tell a judge I will love my daughter forever. Once I read Isaiah 25:1 peace came upon me. “Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.” Perfect faithfulness. Wonderful things. Things planned long ago. Yes to all of that. I soaked those words deep into my heart and rested in them. Our wonderful daughter was God’s plan for our family long ago because of His perfect faithfulness. Praise The Lord!

His glory shines in every adoption story. Just as every birth is His miracle, so is every story of adoption. As I reflect on Nov. 21, 2017, as we celebrate our first anniversary of being a family of five, I rejoice, mourn, hurt, and love so much more deeply. That day was predestined by our Savior and happened right in the midst of National Adoption Awareness Month and Thanksgiving season.

Our daughter doesn’t deserve the heartache of her story, but I have faith the Lord will use it to redeem so much more than her first 26 months of life. Isaiah 25:1 not only gave me peace the day I went before the judge to claim her as ours, Isaiah 25:1 is God’s scripture for Sara claiming her as his. He has great things planned for her life.

I always pray our lives will glorify God and we will never seek to own our stories but let the world know they belong to our Savior. I had no idea what that looks like day to day, but when we were invited in July by U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell to join the annual Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Angels in Adoption ceremony on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., I immediately began to ask the Lord to go before us and keep his story of our Sara’s adoption his and not let us make it ours. After all, Sara is his and he is the only one who has been with her since before her birth. He knows every coo she made, every tear she cried, every hunger pain, every smile, every fear and every trauma she has and is overcoming.

In late September, we joined hundreds of other families from across the United States to celebrate adoption and children finding forever families. I prayed Sara’s story would glorify God during this trip, but I was not prepared for the overwhelming burden for the orphan that resurfaced in my soul. Washington D.C. was more than just a trip to accept a pin, talk about God’s story, and spend time with my family.

God gave us so many gifts during this trip. The first was meeting Kristin Taylor! Seriously, how did God hide her and Greg from us for so long? I mean, my husband and Greg graduated from Murray State University in 2000 then Kristin and I graduated in 2001. So we went to college together for four years and we never met. We met in the lobby of a hotel in D.C.!

Another gift was meeting in person an adoptive momma who I connected with during our Ethiopian adoption walks. Kelli Belt from Oklahoma is a powerful, strong, supportive mom who (who knew!) also was good friends with Kristin! {Kelli also shared here recently!} It was a sweet three days of celebrating children, meeting friends face to face for the first time, and meeting new friends who you feel like you’ve known forever! Our God is in the details, friends! He is such the perfect gift giver.

James 1:27 has never rung truer than after our visit to Washington D.C. I had this scripture on the back of my tank when I ran my first half marathon. It’s a scripture that lays on my heart and sends me into prayer asking the Lord where He is leading me. Sara’s story is one of thousands of stories of children finding their forever home. Our time in Washington, D.C. reopened my eyes not only to children internationally without families but also to children in our own backyard who are begging for a family.

As Christians, we can easily get into our own bubbles without even realizing it. Serving those that are easy to serve, loving those that are easy to love, but James 1:27 calls us to pure religion, which is to take care of the orphans and widows in their distress and to not be polluted by the world. Meeting and spending three days with fellow adoptive families who have fostered 50+ children, those who have adopted 10 children, those who have adopted one, and those who spend their entire lives advocating for all children, I see God at work for His children.

All of this is overwhelming from a human perspective, but if we turn our heart toward Jesus and simply ask what our next steps are, He will guide us. And that’s exactly where I am right now. What are my next steps in helping foster children, supporting foster families, and advocating for those without a voice?

As I continue to pray about where the Lord is calling me next, please know I am praying for those of you who are in the trenches of adoption – whether it’s waiting, post-adoption, or serving these families. The spiritual warfare is real! But goodness, these children are so worth it!

The main characters in my stories are my entrepreneur husband, our ninth-grade girl who never forgets, our have-no-fear sixth-grade boy, and our joy-filled kindergarten girl. As we live out our stories, we seek God as the author of them all.

Nothing like starting a road trip by finishing an Nothing like starting a road trip by finishing an @elinhilderbrand book. I’d held off reading “Winter in Paradise” because the premise that a father’s death exposes his secret life hits way too close to home. But, really, fiction books can be therapeutic.

I appreciated the raw emotions of a wife, two brothers, and others learning of tragedy and processing the ripples of that moment. Of course, who doesn’t love a story set in the U.S. Virgin Islands? AND it’s this the first in a three-book series, and I’ve got the next two ready to go on my Kindle.

My kids had a yearbook signing party today. And ki My kids had a yearbook signing party today. And kids today don’t know how to sign yearbooks. Cate, my rising sophomore, says it’s because they have phones to take photos and text each other. She’s probably right.

But the whole conversation and experience took me down memory lane. So much so, I got these yearbooks from my high school days off my bookshelf and read notes. Admittedly, I can’t remember a few people who proclaimed what a great friend I was and I never called some people who wanted to KIT — that’s Keep In Touch, kids — and left their phone numbers (and pager number in one instance!)! 🤣

I also proceeded to text the three friends (well, really, five, because two girls married two guy friends of mine) with whom I do actually KIT. I have their numbers saved in my iPhone, thankfully. We have made grown-up memories together. We message and try to see each other. My husband knows their maiden names.

Truly, how has it been 25 years since I graduated from Oldham County High School? I’m sitting on the porch now, rememebering how faithful God has been and thinking about how high school seems like a lifetime ago but also like yesterday. 💙

HAGS, everybody!

A weekend mostly at home meant I read this domesti A weekend mostly at home meant I read this domestic thriller. I’ve always seen @diane.chamberlain.author’s books, but this was the first one I read. I’ve already downloaded others to my Kindle.

Living with a secret is all Eve Elliot knows. Her life unravels when she confesses to what she knows and there are ripple effects for her husband and two daughters. I thought I had it all figured out and then there was another surprise right at the end!

Well, COVID has changed our vacation plans. Honest Well, COVID has changed our vacation plans. Honestly, it’s hard to believe two-plus years later, and COVID is still interrupting all kinds of things. I know it’s a privilege to travel, but there’s still disappointment. Regardless, we can’t board a cruise ship in Canada on Monday to go to Alaska when my boy tested positive for COVID last night. (Yes, twice. 🤦🏻‍♀️)

But the real point of this post: we are regrouping and going to Wisconsin Dells next week. I’m excited to see somewhere new, even if it’s not what I’d been planning. Let’s be honest, the logistics to get to the cruise were already a lot, so maybe this closer-to-home trip is meant to be right now.

Anyway, who has been to Wisconsin Dells area? We found a condo and have a list of things going, but I’m accepting all entertainment and restaurant recommendations.

I don’t really want to get into an abortion deba I don’t really want to get into an abortion debate here, but I will always champion the unborn, advocate for life, and support mothers and families. When I say “choose life,” I mean in and out of the womb. Choosing life begins with not having an abortion, but it continues to advocating for adoption, foster care, support for moms in lots of different situations.

Western Kentucky is blessed with resources that do this, including @lifehousemurray in Murray and @_hopecenter in Mayfield. Those are great places to send your money and diapers, recommend to moms expecting or raising little ones, and keep in your prayers.

If you know someone fostering, we have Partners In Care Foster Closet that offers clothes and supplies to western Kentucky foster families. No strings attached.

I will forever be an open book about adoption, so I’ll be happy to talk about that with anyone who desires to know more. I even wrote a book about our adoption stories: bit.ly/PeaceInTheProcess #linkinbio

My three kids have life because three women chose it for them. Those decisions changed my life for the better, and that’s only one piece of a much bigger story.

Here we are halfway through the year, and so far I Here we are halfway through the year, and so far I've read 40 books. That pace is well beyond my usual number for the year. Last year I read 62 total. I don't join challenges, plan what I'm going to read next, or even have a goal. But I still love keeping track.

Some things to know about my reading habits: I like actual books, but I've been reading often on my waterproof Kindle Paperwhite. I introduced audiobooks into my life this year and especially enjoyed some memoirs while I was driving around while the kids were in school. I will quit books if I can't get into them, and I've done that a few times this year. I almost always have a book (or books, hello, Kindle) with me, you know, just in case I happen upon some time to read. Here are some other tips for making time for books and reading more.

Today #ontheblog I'm sharing the list of the 40 books I've read so far this year. #linkinbio What else do I need to read this year?

The third installment in Abby Jimenez’s The Frie The third installment in Abby Jimenez’s The Friend Zone series may have been my favorite in this enjoyable rom-com series that also takes on some serious topics. (See two previous #KHTreads posts for the other two!)

I was reading it on my Kindle, but then I was early to pick up one of my kids … and realized I forgot my Kindle. I swung by the library and read a few chapters in print while I waited. I couldn’t waste reading time!
