Sing the Bible this Christmas

November 3, 2017 by Kristin 24 Comments

“These songs sound like the Charlie Brown movie,” Ben, who turns 8 this month, said from the back seat of our minivan as we were listening to Slugs & Bugs’ newest Christmas CD, “Sing the Bible Family Christmas.”

I told him Randall Goodgame – the songwriter who creates Slugs & Bugs family music – would be so glad to know my boy recognized the style of music.

“When writing some Scripture songs about the birth of Jesus, I was influenced by the jazz piano music from the Charles Schulz Peanuts Christmas special,” Randall said about the new CD on the Slugs & Bugs’ website. That music just feels like Christmas to me! So I wrote in a similar style.”

It’s a style that works! “Sing the Bible Family Christmas” includes word-for-word scripture songs along with some classic carols – all of which work together to tell about Jesus’ birth and what that means for us.

My favorite song is “When the Fullness of Time Had Come.” It’s taken from Galatians 4:4-7: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

Those words are beautiful in their own right, but then Randall invites Ellie Holcomb to sing which brings even more loveliness to the beautiful reminder of why Jesus’ birth matters.

Here’s a list of all the songs:

1. In the Beginning – John 1:1-4, 14
2. When the Fullness of Time Had Come – Galatians 4:4-7
3. Unto Us a Child Is Born – Isaiah 9:6
4. Mary’s Song – Luke 1:46-49
5. Joseph’s Dream – Matthew 1:18-25
6. O Little Town – Luke 2:8-12
7. Glory to God – Luke 2:14
8. Mary and Jesus (instrumental)
9. Zechariah’s Prophesy – Luke 1:68-70
10. Sing O Heavens – Luke 1:68-70
11. Silent Night – Luke 2:15-20
12. I Heard the Bells

(You can listen to samples of the songs at Slugs & Bugs’ website.)

Yes, this is a Christmas album, but the music is so good and the truth so prevalent that I wouldn’t be surprised if we listen throughout the year.

*****

I supported Slugs & Bugs’ “Sing the Bible Family Christmas” as well as the coming-this-spring “Sing the Bible Vol. 3” in a recent Kickstarter campaign. I paid real money to support these projects because Slugs & Bugs’ music has been good for our family. I’m sharing this review because I truly want to make sure y’all know about this musical goodness as the holiday season approaches. You can buy it online at the Slugs & Bugs store or on iTunes.

But one of you can win a copy! That’s right – I’ve got a copy right here for one family. Use the Rafflecopter below for your entries into the giveaway through Wednesday, Nov. 8. I’ll choose a winner Thursday, Nov. 9.

I love all Christmas music! Of course Hanson Christmas music is my favorite but I honestly love it all. Pretty soon the local Christian radio station will be playing Christmas music and I will listen to it non stop!
Joy to the World and Oh Come All Ye Faithful are some of my favorite songs. Oh Holy Night is another favorite and actually reminds me of Allison since this was sung at her funeral.

I usually wait until Thanksgiving to start with the Christmas music, but I do love it so much! Joy to the World is one of my favorites too. Shaun Groves has a great version of it. We went to the memorial service for Allison in Louisville, so I didn’t realize that song was played at her funeral. It’s a good one, too!

I love music!! So many songs evoke memories – one of them being a vinyl record we played every year when I was little. To this day I get warm fuzzies when I hear “Love’s What You’re Getting for Christmas” by Bobby Sherman…. Okay, so I realize that is a song from the secular mindset – but it reminds me of being together with my parents and brothers and years ago. In celebration of Jesus’ birth, I like “Mary Did You Know”. It puts to mind, being a mom of five, the realness of Mary and her position of being chosen by God to bear His son.

We absolutely love listening to Keith and Kristen Getty’s Christmas CD. And what is the Christmas season without Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, and Josh Groban? 🙂 I am so excited to have been able to be a part of S&B’s most recent Kickstarter campaign so that we can add this wonderful music to our Christmas season this year!

I love summer. But my summer has started off busy: appointments, book edits deadline, establish new habits with the kids at home. All that’s necessary and good, it just cuts into my down time beside the pool.

Today we have two open gyms for our basketball players, my book study with a few friends, a new weekly high school girls’ book study at our house, and a monthly dad-son character study.

I long for a little more white space on the calendar, but I also wouldn’t change a thing because the kids are only 16, 13, and 7 once. This summer will only be this summer once. And I’ve already learned time flies with big kids.

So here we are finding out footing, singing praises with church friends on our porch, grilling delicious chicken, and squeezing in the wide-open spaces when we can. This is evidence of the good stuff.

There were some good twists, and then there were ridiculous twists. I skimmed the end only because I wanted it to make sense. And it didn’t. It was too weird for me.

But this made me wonder: how do we know if a book is going to be weird, contain elements we don’t like, or go places that don’t make sense? I don’t like to read much about a book before I read the book. Usually, I do a better job of picking books for myself.

“The Only Survivors” worked well because there was a lot happening! Lots of creepy, mysterious moments. Only so many people could be guilty of infiltrating a small group who had lots of secrets!

I loved the timeline of this one. The back story about an accident was told in seven one-hour segments. The present mystery was told in seven days.

Y’all we are very ready for summer. ☀️ And Y’all we are very ready for summer. ☀️

And when I say summer, I mean we are ready to shake up the routine, mentally regroup, turn off the alarms, establish some new habits, soak in the sun, and catch up with friends we’ve been crossing paths with too quickly.

I want to savor the #84daysofsummer and I want to embrace this new season. And it’s almost time. Three more days of school. (Deep breaths.)

Meanwhile, I’m going to keep collecting the moments — the hard, hurried, happy, and heartfelt. The seasons do change, but this is the life we are living.

“The moments you collect may not be loud or flashy. They might be quiet or covered or a far-off view you were lucky to catch. But this I know to be true: A moment savored says to your soul, ‘You have lived something beautiful.’ And it keeps you buoyed. It sustains you when you’re running empty. It lifts you up and carries you forward.” — Joanna Gaines in @magnolia summer 2023 journal issue no. 27
