‘Who’s coming over today?’

July 12, 2017 by Kristin 16 Comments

I’m trying not to over do the pool pictures on social media, but that’s how we’ve spent our summer. I like to document everyday life so I am remember. So, there are pool pictures.

On a recent Instagram post about another afternoon at the pool, a college friend commented with some wisdom that reiterated what God has been doing on our porch and in our life this summer.

“It seems like there’s a different set of kids in every group of pool photos you post. I love it! I grew up with a pool in the backyard and having friends over every day to swim was just part of life. It’s an excellent way to make hospitality a normal thing for your kids!”

That is what I want – for me and the kids.

Often hospitality is about being available and willing. Hospitality is showing up, living generously, accepting help, and offering help.

“Hospitality” and “hospital” have the same
word origin, so no wonder hospitality heals.

{Tweet that.}

Around here, the pool and porch have been good excuses to invite people over to our house and into our lives. The kids who come over are making memories while they swim together, but connections beyond the pool also are made too.

“Who’s coming over today?” is a daily question from my kids.

I want my house to be a gathering place for people and their stories, and this summer has taught me some things about that.

1. Feeding people can be simple.

Get carry out. Order pizza. Have a taco bar. Buy the birthday cake. Host a potluck. Nobody cares that you didn’t make the chicken salad from scratch.

2. Keep items on hand to make hospitality happen.

We have a caddy of plastic ware right next to the stack of paper plates and an extra fridge stocked almost entirely with drinks. I keep Wyler’s Italian Ice in the freezer to share with friends who come to spend the afternoon at the pool. (Sam’s is a good place to stock up on these goodies!)

3. Connections happen when we let them.

More than once this summer I’ve wanted to break out with that song about “Make new friends, but keep the gold. One is silver and the other’s gold.” This was especially true when my long-time best friend told my newer, fellow-adoptive mom friend who she had prayed for her throughout the couple years I have known her.

4. Kids are kids regardless of their backgrounds.

Kids don’t care about skin color, whether adoption or foster care is part of their family’s story, or what kind of house they call home. They make up games and play them together.

5. Hospitality can happen anywhere.

You can meet poolside (obviously!), at a restaurant, or a picnic table near a playground.

Of course, hospitality doesn’t have to involve a party. We obviously like parties and gatherings around here. But hospitality can mean making a phone call or sending a text. It may means showing up with a meal or a McDonald’s Coke. It’s about letting someone in your life and being willing to walk into theirs.

Hospitality heals, so let’s take care of each other. It really doesn’t have to be complicated, so let’s jump in together.

*****

What’s one way you have seen hospitality in your life lately? How do you regularly provide hospitality and what’s a tip for doing so?

Great insights! And so glad that your yard and your pool have become a kid-magnet! My fall back menu is pizza babies, and I always try to have English muffins, pepperoni and cheese in my freezer — just in case!

Kristin, I love this post for many reasons but mainly because it brought to mind words I spoke last night. My husband & I went to do a hospital visit. We stayed for a few hours and observed much. At one point, I said to our family, “This hospital is not very hospitable!” You have so hit it on the head – There is a healing aspect to hospitality that is truly needed and beyond explanation. Thank you for being a beautiful example of hospitality! And bring on the pool photos!!! 🙂 xo

I read that about hospital and hospitality before, and it’s really stuck with me and God has reminded me of it over and over again this summer. Thanks for being here, Lesley!

I love your pool pictures. Oh, how I miss the pool days. Mine are grown up now. However, we took our dog to the “dog lake, ” and I found that is a great place to connect. Maybe I will bring some extra waters and snacks next time so that I can extend some hospitability.

Unexpected friendship can happen anytime and place if we are open. I love the song you mentioned about friends. Now I can’t get the tune out of my head.

Before I settle into a school time routine, I want Before I settle into a school time routine, I want to recap summer — my favorite season of the year that, honestly, just didn’t look like I expected & hoped in many ways. Even so, goodness was all around us.

This was the summer of …

Crunch-dipped ice cream Drumsticks 🌼 4/5 of us having strep throat at different times, and Ben having it 3 times 🌼 Six Flags and Kentucky Kingdom 🌼 Venture River season passes 🌼 Plans changing and changing again 🌼 Plan B vacation because Covid is still interrupting plans 🌼 Friends sharing big news — someone’s son was injured, friends moving toward divorce after two decades of marriage, a friend being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, and a friend’s house flooding in a negligent way. 🌼 Holding onto the good news 🌼 Counting gratefulness 🌼 Celebrating 20 years of marriage 🌼 Reading mostly romance novels because that’s what sounded good 🌼 Traditional summer weekends with some out-of-town friends 🌼 Quiddler, although I can’t seem to win this word game. 🌼 Conversations in our bedroom with our oldest who likes to stay up later than us 🌼 Binge-watching “Yellowstone” 🌼 The easiest, clearest water we’ve had in six summers with a pool despite the leaking liner 🌼 Feelings that reminded me of Social Distancing 2020 🌼 Noticeable growth in my kids, the weeds around my house, and within my own heart.

Most years, I mourn the end of Summer Break, but this year routine & rhythms are returning at the right time. I spent some time this summer grieving some changes in friendships and disappointments with details that were far out of my control. But I also enjoyed life, sunshine, and right where God has me. That reality is helping me be ready for whatever comes next.

At Back to School Night yesterday, I had been work At Back to School Night yesterday, I had been working as the school finance person when I decided to get Rachel from the gym to go meet her teacher. Turns out she had already gone with me to meet her teacher, the only teacher in the whole school I don’t know! I went to her classroom and there she was chatting with Mrs. Mason and playing with some friends. That girl radiates confidence.

So, with or without me, they’re ready! Bring on first grade, seventh grade, and sophomore year! @ncca.lions

I took a break from my work & chores to read yeste I took a break from my work & chores to read yesterday and I’m so glad I did. I had to stay up late to finish it last night.

First of all, don’t judge this book by its cover, which I don’t like. (I’ve seen another cover for this same book, so I really don’t understand!)

Anyway, I loved the story of first love and loss and reconnection told in the dual now-and-then timeline. I thought the end was a little abrupt, but maybe that’s just because I wanted a little more about Macy and Elliot.

We’ve taken our older kids on short-term mission We’ve taken our older kids on short-term mission trips and hope to go on more. They’ve served locally. We support missionaries. We want our kids to be open to wherever God calls them and incorporating missions into our small-town life is one way we, as parents, have hoped to teach that.

I’m incredibly thankful @hardinbaptistchurch comes alongside us with the same message. The middle and high school @hardinstudents spent the summer looking at different aspects of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20. Youth minister @cbright2 spent the last Sunday of the series looking at nine practical ways that students – yes, even middle and high schoolers – could participate in and pray about going for God.

Chase shared these 9 Ways to Go with students' parents, and I asked him for permission to share them with you because even as an adult I want to remember to live on mission – even right where I am.

“Writing is what makes me happy. Writing, even, “Writing is what makes me happy. Writing, even, is how I feel I contribute to the world. Reminding people of what’s important. Letting them escape the harsh parts of life, even if it’s just for a few hours. Helping them feel happiness through watching happily-ever-afters unfold. Remembering truths. Recalling their self-worth. Loving others. Living well. Learning. I want to do that.”

And, let’s be honest, love stories about writers make me happy too. “Meet Me in the Margins” was cute, predictable, and a good way to escape for a little while.
