I’ve been thinking about roots.
Perhaps the fact my 20th high school reunion is approaching in a few weeks has me nostalgic. Or maybe having a girl in double digits prompted reflections. My youngest is closer to 2 than 1. My middle boy is growing up before my eyes. Greg and I are going on 15 years of marriage.
And we’ve put down roots.
We’ve developed traditions and habits. We have preferences that bind us together. We have the memories that unite us and the stories that make us laugh. We like to visit other places but are always eager to come home together.
Roots are the foundations that give freedom to
visit other places and the security to belong.
That’s what I want my kids to know. And that’s what I need my own heart to know too.

If I were to pick a soundtrack to this post, it would be Zac Brown Band, especially “Roots” and “2 Places at 1 Time” from the newest ZBB album.

I’m also joining Kate Motaung and the Five Minute Friday writing crew with this post inspired by the prompt VISIT. It’s the last link up at Kate’s place as FMF has its own new home. You should visit us there.
Hi Kristin – that is such a good point, that roots give us that firm foundation from which we can move out and visit other places. It strikes me that it must be so devastating and disorienting to be homeless — no solid landing-place to feel safe and secure. How could you enjoy visiting new places and seeing new things if you didn’t have those roots to circle back to?
That’s such a true (and sad) point about homeless. It would also apply to orphans and people who feel alone. I’m thankful God can redeem any situation and make anyone new. Thanks for being here and making me think, Jeannie.
I loved reading your post. It was almost poetic. I caused me to reminisce on the foundations that I brought into my family 35 years ago and how we have established our own roots. Thanks for sharing. Happy Memorial Day!
Thank you. It’s interesting how some foundations last for generations and others are established with each little family. Thanks for being here.
I enjoyed reading your post. There is something about reunions and children that cause one to stop and reminisce. Time goes by so quickly. My oldest is 18 and graduating this year. It’s funny but it’s been causing me to revisit my senior year in high school and my own graduation which only seems like yesterday. Time really does fly by!
Thanks, Susan! Time really is a funny thing. I’m glad you enjoyed being here and hope you come back again.
THIS: “Roots are the foundations that give freedom to
visit other places and the security to belong.” My 20 year reunion is this year too. I’m over in the 3 spot this week.
Glad you’re here, Tara!
Hope it’s not too late to leave an FMF comment. Roots are good and you are forming them deep and in good soil. Good job!
It’s never too late, friend. Thanks for your encouragement and sweet words. xo
