I didn’t expect to love remakes of movies I watched as a kid. Like “Annie.” Or “The Parent Trap.” And now “Beauty and the Beast.”
In all three instances, I love the new version – the version my kids’ will call their own – better than the one I had always known. I surprise myself because I’m usually not so quick to embrace change.
The big kids and I started Spring Break with a trip to the movie theater to see the new “Beauty and the Beast.” And then less than a week later when Ben was recovering from second-degree burns to his face and hands, he watched the original version.
(For the record, my kids like the newer versions of the three movies I mentioned better too, although that’s not as surprising. Except Cate, who didn’t love the additional scene when Belle learns more about what happened to her mother.)
Maybe the fact I know the story helps me welcome change.
A fresh take on a classic story
really is a beautiful thing.
Our faith is like that. Because we know the Creator who never changes and the end of the story, new beginnings are possible.
God sent his son Jesus to earth as a baby to live and minister here. Then God sent his only Son to die a brutal death so a few days later He could rise again for our sake. That’s the classic story. The ending of eternal life with him is promised because of that empty grave.
We know that ending so we’re able to embrace new beginnings and transformed version of ourselves here on earth. Nothing like some modern remakes of classic movies to remind me changes can be good especially when our eyes are fixed on the One who never changes.

My friend Mary Carver is really good at seeing truth in books and movies. She’s written a couple devotions that do just that. One is based on the “Gilmore Girls” and her newest is lessons on God’s love inspired by “Beauty & the Beast.”
In “Tales as Old as Time: Lessons on God’s Love Inspired by Beauty & the Beast,” Mary weaves together this beloved Disney movie, everlasting truth from the Bible, and pieces of her own story in her new devotional that will encourage readers to rest in God’s love. The stories will have you nodding in agreement and remembering your own life – the one that isn’t a fairy tale but is full of beauty anyway.
And there’s a treat!
Mary is offering you, my sweet readers, a free coloring sheet. {<– Click there! Download it! It’s beautiful!} AND if you buy “Tales as Old as Time,” she’s going to send you two beautiful lock screens for your phone. To redeem this offer, email your receipt to marycarver@live.com.
If coloring is your think, you should download the coloring sheet and then show us on Instagram or Facebook how your picture turns out. Be sure to use #talesasoldastime with your posts so Mary and I can find you.

I always enjoy hearing about your family’s doings.
And thanks for these insights on the Great Story. It’s always new when it falls on a receptive heart.
Thanks for your sweet comment, Michele! I’m always glad to have you here.
Haven’t seen the movie yet – waiting to see it with my daughter and granddaughter!!! Never too old for a good fairy tale, amen?
Never! Y’all are going to love it so much. xo
I loved the new Beauty and the Beast! I love the old one too, but this felt so much more “real” with real actors and all. And the extra story parts were so interesting.
Mary’s book sound great. I haven’t read any of her books based on….books or movies yet, but they sound great!
Thanks for sharing
I loved it so much too. It was so pretty and real. Thanks for being here, Becky! xo
I loved the movie. I think I might even like it better than the original one, too. And even if it wasn’t a good story it has so many good actors in it!
Mary’s devotion book sounds interesting. I love it when people can see truth in books and movies and then weave it together to bring it home.
Blessings to you, Kristin!
I really loved it too. So much. Thanks for being here faithfully, Gayl!

Isn’t the coloring page beautiful?! Be sure to share it when you have it colored so I can see what you did. AND let me know what you think of the new Beauty & the Beast when you get a chance to go to the theater. Thanks for being here, Tara!
