With Open Hands

March 13, 2017 by Kristin 10 Comments

“… A clenching fist, a life of fear,
A burden held, has no place here
Cause You call me now to cast it all
On the shoulders of the one who’s strong

Take it all – every hope, every dream, every plan.
Take it all – every weight, all the shame and brokenness.
Jesus, I surrender all – every victory and loss
Take it all, take it all til all I have is open hands …”

{From “Open Hands” by Laura Story}

The title track of “Open Hands” by Laura Story could be my life’s theme song.

I notoriously hold on to pretty much everything too tightly. I resist change initially and dig in my heels. I fight what I know is right sometimes because I want to think I can do it myself.

But God always shows me a better way.

He always prompts me to loosen my grip, lay down my fears, and embrace the real life He’s given me. I end up coming back to Him, lifting my open hands, knowing I should have done that in the beginning. Slowly, I’m quicker to loosen my grip and open my hands than I used to be, but I’m grateful He continues to take it all from my stubborn grasp.

This song from Laura Story is a sweet reminder of this message of surrender I need over and over again in my life. The fact Third Day’s Mac Powell sings along is icing on the cake. He’s a fellow Atlanta-native and Story’s longtime friend. This duet was refreshing for my soul, as was the rest of the new album from Laura Story.

Throughout the Bible, there are countless stories of ordinary people whole-heartedly attempting to live a life fully surrendered to God’s unique calling on their lives. More than once, God asks people of faith to relinquish control and simply trust Him. These days, singer/songwriter Laura Story is discovering the beauty found in letting go.

Story’s fifth studio album – “Open Hands” – strives for that posture of surrender. It officially released March 3 from Fair Trade Services.

“We never get to a point where we can do life apart from complete and total daily dependence on Jesus,” Story says in information provided by Fly By Promotions. “The irony is the less control we have, the more peace we have and the more, I would even say, success and joy we find. It’s a contrary picture to what the world tells us, but it’s gaining through letting go.”

But that’s what leads us to worship, which Story defines as “worth-ship.”

“It’s giving God worth, and sometimes that means verbal adoration and praise. Sometimes that’s showing Him worth with our calendars and our checking accounts. No matter what it is, it always begins with open hands. It always begins with a willingness to say, ‘You are worth whatever cost you call me to give,’” she said. “Worship in its very core begins with surrender. That’s how we really show God that He’s worth it all.”

About the album

A parade of A-list songwriters, including Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Mia Fieldes, Hank Bentley, Sarah Hart and Seth Mosley, among others, pepper the album’s 11 tracks.

2. Open Hands (Featuring Mac Powell)

6. Awake My Soul (A 1000 Tongues)

Surrender is such a vulnerable and freeing word to me. It means I cannot do it myself…only with God!

The only way to find freedom and peace is when I give the Lord all that I am to be used for His glory. I’m often afraid to change, that it will alter the “norm” that is comfortable. It’s God’s desire to make me more like Jesus and follow Him in order to find purpose and joy in Life.

Love this quote: “We never get to a point where we can do life apart from complete and total daily dependence on Jesus.” I am slowly learning this. I often feel overwhelmed and defeated, but I am trying to run to the Lord each day and ask what HE wants me to do. Then, even if I am tired, I can know that He will provide the strength to do what He has called me to, and nothing more.

God really been teaching me about needing him every moment lately. I’m such a planner and I like to plan ahead and work ahead, but I’ve been in a season of having to do one thing at a time and not always much ahead of time. God’s been good (as always) to show up right alongside me and make a way through everyday life. I’m so glad our strength truly does come from him. And I’m glad you’re here, Becca!

About Me

Telling stories is my therapy and I love sharing them with friends on my porch.

The main characters in my stories are my entrepreneur husband, our eighth-grade girl who never forgets, our have-no-fear fifth-grade boy, and our joy-filled preschool girl. As we live out our stories, we seek God as the author of them all.

Seven weeks after quadruple bypass heart surgery, Seven weeks after quadruple bypass heart surgery, my mother-in-law moved home today. We were happy to care for her and we are thrilled she’s doing so well.

I knew she was faithful and strong before, but watching her recovery from open heart surgery convinced me even more of her steadfastness and courage.

Often I don’t want the weekend to end or the sea Often I don’t want the weekend to end or the season to change, but I’m looking forward to Monday after three weeks of quarantine and sickness then snow. I’m looking forward to the snow melting away and eager for spring to bloom.

I’m grateful for health and family and home and a fresh start. A walk through the melting snow with the sun shining and temperatures in the 50s was a sweet spot today. So was gathering with friends we hadn’t seen in too long after church.

Just a few days ago I felt defeated and weary. Now I’m feeling ready and hopeful. Transitions can be rough, but ultimately I’m thankful for new mercies and new seasons.

I ended 2020 saying it had been a weird year, but, I ended 2020 saying it had been a weird year, but, truthfully, the first six weeks of 2021 have been weird too. Weird seems like a weak word, but I can’t think of another. These past six weeks haven’t been bad, have included plenty of great moments, and shifted so many things in our house. Through it all, my best friend Jaclyn and I haven’t gotten to hang out much.

I’m thankful Greg picked up her and her girls in his four-wheel drive truck yesterday after his short day at the office. We bundled up for some time outside, the kids had legit snow cones, we combined food to make dinner, and various people played various games. Jaclyn and her girls went back to their house this morning, but we are all thankful for old friends & new memories.
