the {middle} one

January 13, 2017 by Kristin 4 Comments

I hadn’t planned on writing today, but when I saw the Five Minute Friday prompt I knew I wanted to write. So here I am, ignoring chores while my baby sleeps, writing. Here’s how Five Minute Friday works: Kate Motaung gives a prompt and a flash mob of writers set their timers for five minutes and just write. This week’s prompt: MIDDLE.

So, ready, set go …

*****

“Why is it 7:02 and nobody is up?” my middle child said as he rushed into our bedroom this morning.

I hadn’t even opened my eyes yet when he said he’d already gotten dressed and packed his lunch.

I immediately started thinking about how to rearrange what my morning was going to look like because the kids were going to miss the bus. Most mornings Greg takes Cate and Ben to the bus stop, which is 12 minutes from our house, so they can get a ride to the private school they attend in a neighboring county.

I figured out how the mac and cheese was going to get assembled and baked for the teacher luncheon, the black bean salsa was going to get mixed for my monthly lunch with fellow adoptive mommas, and how the kids would make it close to on time for school. And then I bolted out of the bed.

Sure enough, Ben was decked out in his uniform khaki pants and navy blue polo shirt. Admittedly, I have no idea what he had in his lunch box other than peaches, but I asked for him to pack Cate’s lunch too. I saw he made her turkey sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls and added an apple and chips to her lunch box.

That middle boy of mine sometimes tests my patience and challenges me to see life differently. But this morning that middle boy stepped up and helped out tremendously. Without him, we would have been more than eight minutes late to school.

Ben is a stereotypical middle child – which was a huge part of why I believed we’d have a third child. He snuggles in between people, likes to be in the middle of whatever is going on, is always on the move, embraces adventure, loves his big sister in ways she doesn’t understand, and adores his baby sister.

This morning my middle child was my alarm and helper.

*****

Of course, I’m joining the other Five Minute Friday writers at Kate Motaung’s place. Come join us.

What a nice tribute to your middle child. Glad he was such a helper and your alarm today.

Thanks, Tara! I had more to say, but, well, you know … five minutes isn’t very long! 🙂 Happy weekend!

I love your “where he belongs” addition! “Middle” was such a fun prompt and I came close to not playing because at first imagination failed me, but in the end all the responses were creative. Technically I’m a middle child, too, but didn’t discover I had an older and a younger sister until well into adulthood, so I have a lot of traits of an only solo kid. Excited to see your Three Words for this Wednesday! Hugs!

Oh that’s an interesting “middle” story from your own life. I’m sure that shook things up a little bit! Thanks for stopping by, Leah!

About Me

Telling stories is my therapy and I love sharing them with friends on my porch.

The main characters in my stories are my entrepreneur husband, our ninth-grade girl who never forgets, our have-no-fear sixth-grade boy, and our joy-filled kindergarten girl. As we live out our stories, we seek God as the author of them all.

She fed animals, played by herself, made friends, and played some more — for 3 1/2 hours. I found an Adirondack chair and finished my third book of the trip.

Nothing like starting a road trip by finishing an Nothing like starting a road trip by finishing an @elinhilderbrand book. I’d held off reading “Winter in Paradise” because the premise that a father’s death exposes his secret life hits way too close to home. But, really, fiction books can be therapeutic.

I appreciated the raw emotions of a wife, two brothers, and others learning of tragedy and processing the ripples of that moment. Of course, who doesn’t love a story set in the U.S. Virgin Islands? AND it’s this the first in a three-book series, and I’ve got the next two ready to go on my Kindle.

My kids had a yearbook signing party today. And ki My kids had a yearbook signing party today. And kids today don’t know how to sign yearbooks. Cate, my rising sophomore, says it’s because they have phones to take photos and text each other. She’s probably right.

But the whole conversation and experience took me down memory lane. So much so, I got these yearbooks from my high school days off my bookshelf and read notes. Admittedly, I can’t remember a few people who proclaimed what a great friend I was and I never called some people who wanted to KIT — that’s Keep In Touch, kids — and left their phone numbers (and pager number in one instance!)! 🤣

I also proceeded to text the three friends (well, really, five, because two girls married two guy friends of mine) with whom I do actually KIT. I have their numbers saved in my iPhone, thankfully. We have made grown-up memories together. We message and try to see each other. My husband knows their maiden names.

Truly, how has it been 25 years since I graduated from Oldham County High School? I’m sitting on the porch now, rememebering how faithful God has been and thinking about how high school seems like a lifetime ago but also like yesterday. 💙

HAGS, everybody!

Living with a secret is all Eve Elliot knows. Her life unravels when she confesses to what she knows and there are ripple effects for her husband and two daughters. I thought I had it all figured out and then there was another surprise right at the end!
