Parenting more like Jesus

January 23, 2017 by Kristin 3 Comments

“Parenting with Grace and Truth” by Dan Seaborn is a good handbook for moms and dads to use to direct them to the Bible. It’s full of scripture references, practical information, stories, questions to consider, and encouragement to stay the course of raising our kids to know Jesus.

Personally, I especially appreciated the third chapter – “The Truth About Discovering Your Children’s Unique Talents and Abilities” – and how that section affirmed my belief teaching opportunities aren’t limited to organized activities. Playing board games and eating meals around the table matter.

In our family, I’m hesitant to commit to many regular activities. Ben typically plays soccer in the spring and fall. Cate has played soccer in the past, but she stopped when she wanted to take horseback riding lessons. She would still like to do that; we just haven’t put it in our schedule lately but will again. We also like to do things as a family. On weekends and in the evenings after school, we don’t split up much.

God calls us to community. Greg and I believe our first priority is to our family of five and then we can go out from there, together. This book affirmed that for me.

(This book echoed some points from “Parenting” by Paul David Tripp. That book rocked my parenting world, so I’ll consider that a good thing!)

“Parenting with Grace and Truth” also reminded me how parents are the ones who define success for their kids. Does winning a soccer championship take priority over login generously by giving of our time, money, and things? What do our kids see us doing? That’s how success is defined, so choosing what we emphasize in our everyday lives matters.

Admittedly, I sometimes get caught up in the nagging commands: Clean your room. Put away your clothes. Do your homework. But then there are times I lay with my first-grade boy in his bed and read the latest Jack and Annie adventure to him and I am relieved to spend my time that way instead of blurting out commands. I want to trade my natural authoritarian parenting style to ways that are more like Jesus.

I want my default to change
so my kids can see Jesus in me.

{Tweet that.}

“Our job as parents is to raise our children to be servants of God and to do everything we can to thoroughly equip them for every good work. … We sometimes get confused and think our job as parents is to raise an Olympic athlete, a scholar, or perhaps the next president of the United States. When we think in those terms, we are putting more focus on what our children are going to do in life than on who they will become.” – Dan Seaborn

That’s what leading and loving our kids like Jesus is ultimately about – and this book brings perspective to that.

About the book

In “Parenting with Grace and Truth,” Dan Seaborn takes parents into the Bible to help them understand Jesus’ character, explains how He models grace and truth, and teaches them how to apply Jesus’ example to their parenting. Specifically, he explores how to build character in your children, the truth about discovering your child’s unique talents and abilities, how to parent your family through a crisis, and what it means to be an effective parent. He also shares how grace isn’t letting a child off the hook, but instead, loving them through their mistakes, and discusses what “normal” parenting looks like (even if the experts or your friends tell your differently).

Seaborn also takes parents through a helpful discussion of their parenting styles and explains why Jesus’ parenting style is best. He gives readers a very personal look into his own family’s story, particularly the many challenges he and his wife faced with their youngest child. He also spends time considering the needs of blended families and the unique roles of mom and dad in parenting. At the end of each chapter, Seaborn includes several questions to consider about your own parenting relative to the topic.

“Parenting with Grace and Truth” is a 224-page paperback published by Barbour Publishing/Shiloh Run Press (January 2017). It’s available on Amazon and wherever else books are sold.

Our parenting style has changed over the years. I thought my child needed to be in everything a do everything, but as I’ve had more children, God has refocused us as parents to more family time and less going and doing everything. We enjoy doing the things our children like to do, but we can’t do everything without sacrificing family. We also spend time discussing why we act a certain way and not just punish them. We use a lot of Grace over here. Lol

Grace wins, thankfully. And we use {more than} our share here too. I like how you’ve been willing to change as your family grows and changes. That’s really important and wise to make those adjustments.

I’m honestly surprised I didn’t read this book I’m honestly surprised I didn’t read this book sooner. I loved so much about it, but I did want some of her stories to be less repetitive and offer more practical advice for living out “radical, ordinary hospitality.” Rosaria Butterfield defines hospitality like this as sharing what you have in real time, preparing to continually life this lifestyle, and bringing strangers in so they become neighbors who become family.

I took notes throughout, but especially during the introduction. I came away with an appreciation that hospitality can involve lists, schedules, and habits. I felt encouraged, even if I thought the book could have been organized better to include practical tips and other people’s stories.

Something I don’t usually share (online) … I Something I don’t usually share (online) …

I am an opinionated person, but I don’t usually share political opinions on social media. People who know me in real life know I value being pro-life, having less government involvement in our everyday lives, defining marriage as God intended it, and being fiscally conservative. As a former newspaper reporter, I still get excited about elections. I admittedly pay a little less attention in the almost 15 years I haven’t been in a newsroom. But I still care and have plenty of opinions.

I voted today in Kentucky’s Primary Election. I’m thankful for the freedom to share my opinion by darkening some blocks on a paper ballot.

Old friends and live music are two of my favorite Old friends and live music are two of my favorite things, so having them together is the best. My friend Aaron and I went to multiple Dave Matthews Band shows together during our college years, so now two decades later it’s fun to do it again as grown ups with our spouses for a band that speaks truth into our lives.

@needtobreathe put on the loudest acoustic tour I’ve ever seen, but it sure was good! And its encore of completely unplugged songs was especially sweet.

Happiness is … … a slow morning that gave me Happiness is …

… a slow morning that gave me a chance to finish reading a good book right after I fixed my favorite cinnamon toast.

… some shade to invite me to pick some more weeds around the house. But why doesn’t my Apple Watch count this as exercise? It felt like exercise to me!

… an appointment with my oldest girl for us both to get our nails done this morning.

… my youngest girl’s last soccer game of the season, even though the heat made her a little grumpy.

… pool time, another good book to read, my mom visiting for the second weekend in a row, a little more weeding, and a night at home with no specific plans.

Happiness is everyday, normal life with my people, especially when it comes with a slower pace after a hectic week.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve already bou ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve already bought three copies of “Glad You’re Here: Two Unlikely Friends Breaking Bread and Fences” by @walkerhayes and @craigallencooper to gift to specific friends. I’ve referenced this story in conversations this week and will likely recommended it for years to come.

This story is about two seemingly different guys befriending each other because their kids were on the same baseball team and their wives became friends. They kept showing for each other, encouraged each other, and changed each other for the better. In fact, their friendship was the catalyst for Walker deciding to follow Christ.

Give me Applebee’s on a date night, a real-life story of how we are eternally better together, and an audiobook that makes me want to drive and I’m a happy girl. I’m fancy like that.

What I’m wearing … I don’t wear in jewelry, What I’m wearing …

I don’t wear in jewelry, but I love having bracelets that mean things to me.

Today my friend Monica and I talked to our oldest daughters’ high school health class about adoption. My other friend @megandelaneythomas invited us because she recently taught about the reproductive system and wanted the class to hear about adoption as an option. We talked about adoption as a process, redemption to broken circumstances, and picture of God grafting us into his family. We shared resources and advice on counseling for abortion, befriending people who have made different relationships choices, and parenting regardless of how God builds a family.

I left that high school health class thankful for @ncca.lions and the opportunities my kids have had to learn about real things in the context of the gospel. I’m also grateful for this adoption bond Monica and I share with our kids who are the same ages. I’ve always said, adoption is relational to its core, far beyond just bringing a baby home. That circle widened a little today, and I’m glad to welcome others into pieces of our story.

Also, how fun are these bracelets @katie_cunningham85 gave me last week for my birthday? Today seemed like the perfect time to wear them along with my Romans 8:28 reminder — “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Things working together for the good in Christ doesn’t mean easy or convenient. But it does mean all the details and relationships matter. I’m forever grateful for how God built my faith and my family through adoption. Wearing these sweet reminders is good for my soul.
