7 Things I Learned in August

September 1, 2014 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Yes, it’s September already. Hello, the month that begins fall. But I want to reflect on August before I forget the whole month, which is entirely possible because I’ve been forgetful lately.

1. NEEDTOBREATHE has some great new live music.
You can thank me later when you stop listening long enough to do something else. Listen here.

2. All my Kindle highlights are in one place online.
{Get to yours right here. Notice the “Your Highlights” link at the top of the page.} My blogging friend Ashley told me about this awhile ago, but I hadn’t really used it until recently. Silly me; it’s fabulous.

3. Lisa Harris writes good fiction books.
I had her two Southern Crimes series books on my Kindle and read them both in less than a week. I can’t remember the last time I read an entire book in one day, but “Fatal Exchange” was the book for me this past Saturday. I do recommend reading “Dangerous Passage” first. They’re both packed with action and good messages. She has a new one coming out at the end of the year and, yes, “Hidden Agenda” is already on my Amazon Wish List.

4. Launching an ebook is going to be fun.
I poured my heart and much time into writing my ebook. Writing those 24,000 words was a therapeutic, inspiring process, but I am really excited about the launch I have planned. {In case you missed it, I’m forming a launch team. Read more here, if you’re interested in joining us.}

5. Seasons are good.
I’m never ready for school to begin again, but once it does, the routine is good. Seasons are meant to change. And, with that, I’m admitting I’m ready for the humid days to be over for awhile. I’m a summer girl, but I’m ready for some fall days. I want to wear sweatshirts, eat candy corn, watch some Murray State football, watch my kids play soccer, go camping, use our new deck, and eat soup.

6. There is a Bible verse that sums up one of the reasons I write.
“Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.” Psalm 96:3 (NLT) Isn’t that lovely and true? {The other reason I write is for my personal therapy!}

7. I miss being in a women’s Bible study.
So I’m starting one. Our first meeting is this week, in fact. We’re going to do Beth Moore’s “Breaking Free,” which I picked out from my own personal need knowing I probably wasn’t alone.

How was your August?

If I lived near by I would so join your Bible study. I'm considering joining a Bible Fellowship Study group. I have two different options and I just can't decide right now. I'm hoping God speaks to me while in Hawaii so I can come back with a decision made. 🙂 I really love these end of month posts but if I don't write down what I learned along the way I can't remember. hehe. Much love. xoxo

Some months I do a good job having a draft post I just add to as I think of things. Other months, not so much. 🙂 It's still a fun way to remember. I'd love for you to live close enough to be part of the Bible study. Love you, sweet friend.

I had no idea about the Kindle highlights – thanks for that information! It's hard to believe summer is coming to an end. What a great way to start Fall with starting your own Bible study, a perfect way to bring order to our lives. Have a great week Kristin!

    Hey Kristin–
I love that you are starting a Bible Study because you miss being in one. Community is so hard, so important and sometimes as easy as opening the door and inviting them in, right?

About Me

Telling stories is my therapy and I love sharing them with friends on my porch.

The main characters in my stories are my entrepreneur husband, our high school girl who never forgets, our middle school boy who has no fear, and our joy-filled first-grade girl. As we live out our stories, we seek God as the author of them all.

First drum recital is in the books! I’m glad she First drum recital is in the books! I’m glad she got through Jingle Bells last night before she started feeling sickly. My girl naturally has rhythm and we’re glad she has an outlet — thanks to Mr. James at Cadd Music Studios.

(I know, the video is dark. The room was festive and I probably could have done something better while recording!)

“In the first chapter of Luke, Elizabeth says, ‘Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished’ (NIV). Elizabeth is saying to Mary — and to us — ‘if you really believe what the angel told you about this baby, if you take it in, you’ll be blessed.’

But our English word ‘blessed’ is so limp and lightweight. In English we use blessed to mean something like ‘inspired.’ But in the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, the word for blessed meant something much deeper than that. To be blessed brings you back to full shalom, full human functioning; it makes you everything God meant for you to be. To be blessed is to be strengthened and repaired in every one of your human capacities, to be utterly transformed.” - Tim Keller

We got a random break from school and commitments this week - and I really needed it. I’m quick to fill our time, but Ben was sick Tuesday so I only left the house to take him to the doctor. Cate handled school & basketball transportation for her and Rachel.

We had so many kids absent from New Covenant on Tuesday, that we closed Wednesday-Friday to let all the kids & teachers recover. That time at home was exactly what I didn’t know I needed. I’ve cleaned, organized, put up the tree, and rested. Everybody felt good by Thursday, yet we only had minimal outings and I soaked in all the downtime.

Then in the middle of last night, Rachel went down with strep throat. She started an antibiotic this morning and now we’re settling in for another day at home.

Let’s be blessed, friends.

DAY 8: ONE BIG DREAM FOR 2024 for Anchored Women's DAY 8: ONE BIG DREAM FOR 2024 for Anchored Women's Reflect & Refresh Challenge

My dream for 2024 is relief from the things that were challenges this year. I hope my family and I have learned in ways that lead us to seek after God more intimately and consistently. I don’t know what that looks like, but I trust God will continue this work He began.

DAY 7: ONE THING YOU’RE SAYING NO TO IN 2024 for DAY 7: ONE THING YOU’RE SAYING NO TO IN 2024 for @anchoredwomen's Reflect & Refresh Challenge

I told someone in the comments of yesterday’s post: The nos are easier when the yeses are clear.

Several years ago, my counselor encouraged me to list every little and big thing I spend time doing and then let go of some things. I’m not at that same place in life right now, but what I learned from that experience has stuck with me. When my priorities are clear – and they are with family, church, and closest friends, in that order – then I’m able to let go when something isn’t a good fit right now.

I don’t know what specific things will fall in the “no” category in the new year, but I’m confident God will lead me as He has done faithfully this year, which was full of plenty of interruptions, readjustments, and shifts.

I finished this @rebeccayarros book last night whi I finished this @rebeccayarros book last night while my family was watching "Home Alone 2" and I immediately downloaded the rest of the five-book Flight & Glory series, thanks to Kindle Unlimited. Yes, I liked it that much. I loved the characters, the real ways grief was portrayed, and the hockey and military storylines.

P.S. I could have done with fewer sex scenes, but beggars can't be choosers.

DAY 6: ONE THING YOU’RE SAYING YES TO IN 2024 fo DAY 6: ONE THING YOU’RE SAYING YES TO IN 2024 for @anchoredwomen's Reflect & Refresh Challenge

As I think about transitioning into the new year, I am committing to saying yes to God, my family, my church, and my closest friends. Everything else is up for debate. Saying yes to the nearest and dearest is most important to me. When I say yes to my kids’ schedules and needs, that means saying no to other things, but I’ve learned these priorities are what keep me present in this season, right now, with a husband of more than two decades, a 16-year-old who drives herself places, a 14-year-old boy, and an 8-year-old girl. The seasons change quickly, so I want to say yes to this one, right here where God has me.

DAY 5: SOMETHING THAT WAS A CHALLENGE for @anchore DAY 5: SOMETHING THAT WAS A CHALLENGE for @anchoredwomen's Reflect & Refresh Challenge

(Yes, I know, I went quiet there for a few days. I'm back!)

I love having older kids, but our family encountered a challenge this year for one child as adoption trauma, genetics, hormones, school stress, and medicine side effects collided for a perfect storm of mental health challenges. We’re still sorting through it all, waiting for an appointment that we hope brings direction for the next steps, and taking it one day at a time.

We are forever grateful for our everyday friends who have walked alongside us so well. This challenge has interrupted many things, but we’ve also learned a lot about ourselves. One of the greatest joys is knowing my three kids with different personalities and preferences as individuals, and this challenge has magnified that and reminded me how blessed we are, even on the hard days.

We had the best time cheering for our varsity girl We had the best time cheering for our varsity girls at the KCAA Holiday Classic in Independence, KY, on Friday and Saturday. And our girls brought home the first place trophy after an exciting, intense 53-51 overtime win against Oak Ridge Christian Academy last night.

Cate was named to the all-tournament team and had her most-ever 19 points (and two chipped teeth!) in the championship game. I’m so proud of her and her friends. And to think she hadn’t played organized basketball until four years ago. In fact, @ncca.lions girls played in its first game four years ago yesterday. Look how far they’ve come!

Here’s to such a fun 4-0 start to the Lions fifth season of girls basketball. Go Cate! And go Lions! 💛

DAY 4: SOMETHING THAT WENT REALLY WELL for @anchor DAY 4: SOMETHING THAT WENT REALLY WELL for @anchoredwomen's Reflect & Refresh Challenge

Spring Break 2023 was the first time we vacationed with friends. We all boarded Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas for a week of sunshine and fun. It was such a great time – so much so we hope to do another cruise with the same friends sooner rather than later.
