{Love Idol} Preapproved by the Creator

March 24, 2014 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Ben and Cate were late to school on Friday. I don’t like to be late, but I was given a chance to lay down, step on, and crush my idol of Productivity. I failed at first. I rushed people around. I was snippy with everyone while I was frustrate with myself for laying in bed 15 extra minutes.

But once we got in the mini van, I felt my heart relax, even knowing they were going to be late to school. And I let go of the hurried demeanor that too-often steals my joy.

Cate, my first-grader with perfectionist tendencies just like mine, had been wrestling with an insecurity that morning that began with her ponytail and went all the way to her heart. Once I stopped rushing, we talked about what was bothering her on our way to school. Sitting at that one red light and waiting to be able to turn at another intersection slowed us down from getting to school, but it also gave me time to talk to Cate about what was important:

God made her. Her hair isn’t going to look like her friend’s hair. She was created unique, both in her physical appearance and in every other way. As I told Cate about how God preapproves us because he made us and loves us and isn’t waiting on is to perform perfectly, God was speaking to my heart. She wasn’t the only one who needed the truth that morning.

And that applies to each of us.

“Until you are convinced of God’s incredible love for you, you will continue looking for replacement love everywhere but in the heart of Christ.”

{Jennifer Dukes Lee in “Love Idol“}

This truth has been wrecking my heart lately. And I mean wrecking in a way that is ultimately good, even if it’s painful and hard at some moments. I’ve been letting go of replacement loves, some of which are good things. But even good things distract from the best thing.

Jennifer Dukes Lee wrote “Love Idol” not as an expert but as an encourager. Even the subtitle speaks volumes: Letting Go of Your Need for Approval – and Seeing Yourself Through God’s Eyes. Jennifer’s words, which really are God’s message, have seeped into my everyday life. Isn’t that where truth changes us anyway? In her book, Jennifer reminded me “any average moment in this life is never really average if we’re living each ordinary moment for an extraordinary God.”

“To be preapproved means this: We love from our approval, not for our approval. We love without expecting anything in return.”

{Jennifer Dukes Lee in “Love Idol“}

I named my idol Productivity. That’s what distracts me from focusing on loving God and loving others. I’ve laid it down these past few weeks, although I’ve failed plenty of times since. But that’s not my only idol. I’m a people-pleasing, perfectionist-craving momma who often wonders if she did enough or said the right thing. The replacement loves abound in my heart and I have to give them back to the Maker moment by moment, again and again.

But I know my perspective has changed. My to-do list isn’t as dominating as it once was. I’ve yelled less. I’ve seen my chores and relationships and roles differently. Yes, there’s still room for improvement, but at least I know the One is working in changing me. This is a process.

The kids and I walked into school a few minutes late Friday morning. Cate and I hugged each other a little tighter than usual. I reminded her that God loves her and chose her.

I signed in Ben and Cate at the school office at 8:05 and they walked down the hallway to the classrooms. I prayed they carried the truth of being created and chosen by God with them. I prayed they remember they don’t have to perform or fit into some mold to know that life-changing love.

And I left the school knowing being a few minutes late that morning wasn’t going to ruin our day. Those few minutes actually improved our day and most likely our lives.

I received a free copy of “Love Idol” for being part of the book’s launch team, but I believe in Jennifer Duke Lee’s words and am thankful to have this book as a resource. And it’s officially releasing early – today! You can buy it from Amazon or many other booksellers. Read the other posts “Love Idol” has inspired here.

For more encouragement, visit Jennifer Dukes Lee’s website and The Love Idol Movement page on Facebook. I’m also linking up with Jen Ferguson’s Soli Deo Gloria party, where idols are also being smashed.

    I'm anxiously waiting for my copy of Jennifer's book to arrive! Silly me for not pre-ordering. However, what a delight it has been to read of how her book is impacting so many. And I love how it is being used not only to speak to our own hearts but for our children too. This post just makes me smile, Kristin. You are a good mother for speaking His truth to your children. I need to remember that even with young adult children it is never to late to make sure they know God loves them. Especially my older son who I know has struggled with some of the same not good enough issues as I have. Btw, I'm ready for you to come for that visit!! 🙂 {Hugs}

    Thanks, Beth! It's a truth I have to keep learning myself, that's for sure. I had to take a mental break from Storyline because Love Idol was so powerful for me. I'm glad you have a copy coming! 🙂 And, yes, I'm ready for that visit too! I've missed hearing from you lately. Hope you're having a good week. Much love to you!

    It's been super interesting — I think the laying down of any idol allows for more space to cultivate relationships that really matter. I have realized in laying down criticism (and the need for things to be my way, my speed) have allowed me to have emotional energy to really minister to my kids. Less idol + more God = more love

    Yes, yes, yes. This love idol business is changing me as a parent. I was just talking to Greg this morning about how I feel like as God is changing me, he's changing my perspective on my kids and allowing me to be more compassionate and in tune with their needs and struggles. I've got a long way to go, but this has been such an eye-opening journey for me.

    Stopping over from tellhisstory. Great post. I can so relate as I've struggled with idols of productivity and approval as well. What a great example for your kids though that it's OK if you're late, you had a few extra minutes to talk about what's really important. I'm learning that as we as moms learn to lay down our idols our kids benefit exponentially and learn to do the same. That in and of itself is great motivation. Blessings to you.

    Thanks, Zohary! It's a process, but I'm glad my daughter can witness God changing this stubborn part of me! Thanks for coming by.

I’ve had a couple of conversations this week wit I’ve had a couple of conversations this week with dear friends who are walking through hard things. I’ve been proud of them and sad about circumstances and weary of the brokenness and yet generally peaceful.

Honestly, I feel like it’s a hard cycle to escape. Maybe I’m not supposed to. I never know how much of other’s burdens to carry. And how do I carry their burdens when my own feel heavy?

I sat across the table at Panera with a dear friend who has tear-filled eyes, who has fasted and prayed and sought counsel. I hear another friend express her loneliness in subtle but deep ways. So many of my mom friends are in the trenches of anxiety, both within their kids and within themselves. I hear of tragedies and brokenness all around me. I feel all the pain, forget about mine for a moment, and want to fix it all.

Sometimes solutions are waiting and trusting. Sometimes action is exactly what’s needed. Knowing the difference is hard for me to discern.

So I keep going. I do the things in front of that need to be done. I sit with my friend and send another text. I pray about them and about me. I hope I teach my kids enough about the right things. I try to rush less because then I miss what matters.

Through it all, I am absolutely certain we are meant to walk through this life together. God created us to commune with him and one another.

One afternoon this week we literally stopped on the country road. No cars were around and she wanted to take a picture. While she captures the landscape, I thanked God for a peaceful pause in a chaotic life and asked Him to continue to show His goodness.

The world feels heavy & broken because it is. Pare The world feels heavy & broken because it is. Parenting has me at my max emotional capacity because it takes much soul and mental work. Spring soccer season started in the cold tonight.

Even so, God is good and wants us to live abundantly here on earth while we wait for heaven. This week that looks like church league basketball games, dinner with friends, apologies, sideline encouragement, prayers, middle school humor, theological conversations with friends, tears, and laughter.

Now it’s time to rest and do it again tomorrow. These are the rhythms of grace and goodness, heaven and earth, sorrow and joy.

I sat on my porch beneath a blanket and finished t I sat on my porch beneath a blanket and finished this book today. Yes, I’m fully invested in this Cuba saga involving the Perez family. “The Last Train to Key West” by @chanelcleeton is the third in the series. I have the fourth on hold at the library for pickup on Monday.

I wasn’t sure I was going to love this one as much as I did Cleeton’s first two, but it was a slow-building story that turned stormy. I loved how the three women were in Key West for their own reasons, developed meaningful relationships as they navigated their lives, and managed to survive the storms of their lives and an actual hurricane.

The historical fiction story offers hope:

“It’s strange how your life can change so quickly, how one moment you can barely eke by, desperation filling your days, and suddenly, out of the unimaginably horrific, a glimmer of something beautiful can appear like a bud pushing through the hard-formed earth. There’s so much broken around us; maybe all we can do is try to fix each other, do what we can to preserve these precious moments in a world where there is so much sadness and loss. … Maybe some would say my dreams are too small. Perhaps they would dream of railroads that go over the sea, great, wonderful things. Maybe others want riches and jewels, a chance to travel the globe. For me, this is enough: A corner of paradise in this wretched world that I am able to call my own.” — Helen in “The Last Train to Key West” by Chanel Cleeton

This morning there are three “holes” in Wright This morning there are three “holes” in Wright Road after the creek flooded it overnight. The Calloway County road department responded quickly and is working to pack in various kinds of gravel so it will passable again soon. I’m thankful for their work, but these Band-Aids aren’t an actual solution.

Wright Road needs a permanent solution for when Wildcat Creek rises. A bridge seems to be the best idea, so the creek can rise and flow beneath the road rather than flowing across it and washing out the gravel on top of the culverts.

I know it’s an expensive fix and would take local government working with state government, but I wonder how many times the road has to break before it can be truly repaired.

In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, God has provided conversation with friends who understand, new mercies, a few walks and talks with a friend, and cinnamon rolls on a rainy Friday afternoon. I’ve been reminded when we are vulnerable and share our real lives, friends bring truth and goodness — often in ways we don’t expect but bless us anyway.

People ask when I have time to write. The truth is People ask when I have time to write. The truth is I like to make time to write, but sometimes it happens in the cracks of my days — at Panera, in the Notes app on my phone, at the library before I pickup my kids, or while I’m waiting on kids at activities. This week I edited my manuscript while Rachel practiced soccer.

I needed this weekend. The UK Wildcats didn’t I needed this weekend.

The UK Wildcats didn’t win this afternoon like I had hoped. But following our house full of people on Friday night, I’ve spent a lot of time on my couch, under a soft blanket, with a book, while I watch #MarchMadness.

Yesterday I pulled “When We Left Cuba” by @chanelcleeton from my to-be-read stack and then realized it was the second in a series about the Perez family. Thanks to @libby.app, I was able to get “Next Year in Havana” immediately.

I finished it today during commercials and timeouts. And now I’m going to start “When We Left Cuba” as another basketball game also gets going.
