Spur one another on …

October 29, 2013 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Our kids were off running around in wide open spaces while we chatted at the beginning of our church’s annual fall party on Saturday. So I gathered these friends and asked my husband to take our picture. “Moms need to be in pictures too,” I said.

And it’s true. Moms spend so much time corralling, organizing, training, feeding, transporting, hearing, packing and dressing people. We care for those around us with instinct and purpose. But sometimes we only remain behind the scenes. We go on the vacations. We are at the parties we host. We see our kids succeed and grow and create. We support our husbands. But sometimes we’re missing from the scrapbooks.

These friends of mine are among the people with whom I choose to do life. All those things we do, we often do with each other. Our kids are friends because there’s really no other way. We text and call and show up. We deliver meals and say prayers. We brainstorm and execute.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

{Hebrews 10:24-25}
They spur me on, alright.
All of us have been through heartbreak in the past year or two. Corrie is the one in the picture holding the baby. Y’all, that’s Lucy, the baby doctors said may not live past struggling to take her first few breaths. Clearly, that didn’t happen.
It’s been a year since Corrie learned something wasn’t right with the baby she was carrying inside. She shared some reflections from the past year in church on Sunday. She reminded our church body that sometimes life is heartbreaking, but that we choose to serve a God who is always good. He redeems and creates these stories we’re living out. She knew she wasn’t the only who faced heart ache this year.
Yes, there has been loss and disappointment among us. But we’ve gathered our families and joined with these people who understand. We’ve thanked God, sometimes through tears and aching hearts, because we do believe in goodness. And we haven’t given up meeting together.
Sometimes our meetings come at restaurants as we talk over noise our kids create. Sometimes our meetings come in texts back and forth. Other times the meetings come on Saturday evenings near a bonfire and on Sunday mornings in a sanctuary.

I’m linking up with Crystal Stine’s Behind the Scenes, where writers share stories that go beyond what a photo can capture, and with Jen Ferguson’s Soli Deo Gloria, where God’s goodness is proclaimed. And then on Wednesday I also linked up with Jennifer Dukes Lee’s #TellHisStory because this is an important chapter in The Story.

I just love this. What a beautiful picture and testimony to friendship. We do serve a gracious God and I love how redeems us daily.

I love that you have friends that are close like this. That is the biggest thing I am missing here…it was such a blessing to meet everyone at Allume, but it was also a reminder that I don't have friends where I live that hang out and it can be a lonely place!! Cherish these women!!

    Dear Kristin
With such a bunch of lovely mommy friends, I am sure that you often meet together just changing nappies and feeding hunger tummies. I also thank our Pappa for His goodness and mercy that is wrapped around little Lucy. Oh, she looks like a beautiful doll.
    Blessings XX

Oh, yes, ordinary meeting together, that's for sure! Yes, God's goodness definitely shows through with Lucy. Thanks for your comment, Mia.

About Me

Telling stories is my therapy and I love sharing them with friends on my porch.

The main characters in my stories are my entrepreneur husband, our high school girl who never forgets, our middle school boy who has no fear, and our joy-filled first-grade girl. As we live out our stories, we seek God as the author of them all.

In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, God has provided conversation with friends who understand, new mercies, a few walks and talks with a friend, and cinnamon rolls on a rainy Friday afternoon. I’ve been reminded when we are vulnerable and share our real lives, friends bring truth and goodness — often in ways we don’t expect but bless us anyway.

People ask when I have time to write. The truth is People ask when I have time to write. The truth is I like to make time to write, but sometimes it happens in the cracks of my days — at Panera, in the Notes app on my phone, at the library before I pickup my kids, or while I’m waiting on kids at activities. This week I edited my manuscript while Rachel practiced soccer.

I needed this weekend. The UK Wildcats didn’t I needed this weekend.

The UK Wildcats didn’t win this afternoon like I had hoped. But following our house full of people on Friday night, I’ve spent a lot of time on my couch, under a soft blanket, with a book, while I watch #MarchMadness.

Yesterday I pulled “When We Left Cuba” by @chanelcleeton from my to-be-read stack and then realized it was the second in a series about the Perez family. Thanks to @libby.app, I was able to get “Next Year in Havana” immediately.

I finished it today during commercials and timeouts. And now I’m going to start “When We Left Cuba” as another basketball game also gets going.

I had no idea just how deeply I would be affected I had no idea just how deeply I would be affected while studying Genesis 1-2. Going back to the beginning and seeing how God created, ordered, and filled the earth has been exactly what I didn’t know I needed, especially as a mom.

For quite a while now, I feel like I’ve been living a day at a time. I used to be able to see my life in larger chunks of time and anticipate and prepare accordingly. Now, I slap things on the calendar and then deal with them as they come. Navigating life with two teenagers and a first-grader is the best and hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Honestly, this moment-to-moment living has been good for me and helped me rely on the God who created the stars and rivers that still exist in our world. Focusing on where I am helps me take slower steps, trust God to provide, and remember I’m not in control. I’ve felt an internal shift with my relationships — with my husband, kids, and friends. I’ve felt behind on laundry and dishes and piles of papers. But I’ve also felt a refreshed nearness to God.

I’m going to rest here while believing God created life and light when there was only darkness and continues to order my days.

My friend @ashleelyoung told me about this memoir, My friend @ashleelyoung told me about this memoir, but I knew nothing about Sutton Foster or her story beforehand. She’s a TV actress and Broadway singer and dancer who processes her life — complicated family life, love, loss, spotlight, infertility, adoption, motherhood — by creating. She creates in the kitchen, on stages, with yarn, with paint, with her hands, and with her mind. But her story really is all the experiences and emotions that inspire her creative work. I enjoyed this one.

Yesterday was one of my favorite kids of days with Yesterday was one of my favorite kids of days with some of my favorite friends. Kids played inside and out, the TV was never on, and new memories were made with old friends. Plus we ended the night with our ninth year of Little Hands Trivia Night. It was our worst finish ever, but we still had such a fun time!
