{Out of the Blue} From shyness to confidence

April 4, 2013 by Kristin Leave a Comment

14 months old in 1980

When I was a kid, my shy personality prompted me to play a hide-and-seek game, ducking in the next aisle, when I saw someone I knew. It’s not because I didn’t like them, but I worried that they wouldn’t recognize me or notice me and I’d have to strike up a conversation.

My mom will tell you stories about me hanging onto her leg – literally – like I thought she could shield me from the world. There were these grocery store incidents and the days I didn’t want to walk out onto the gymnastic mat by myself.

{Why I thought pursuing gymnastics was a good idea remains a mystery. I’m not exactly small, thanks to half my genes coming from a former football lineman. But, hey, Mom was a good sport this way.}

I don’t really know when I grew out of the shyness. It was a process that happened as I found my voice in writing in high school and college. Regardless, I’m thankful I don’t usually want to cling to my mom’s leg now that I’m a grown-up girl with kids of my own.

Even so, the people who knew me when haven’t forgotten.

In 2007, my central Kentucky friends threw me {and my newborn adopted daughter Cate} a shower. My friends and family took turns sharing a memory. Yes, this kind of thing still makes me nervous. Maybe that’s just the shyness slipping back into existence.

When it was my mom’s turn at this baby shower when I was 28 year old, she reminisced about my shy days. I think she still likes to talk about it, but that’s OK because she always gets around to how I’ve grown up and grown out of that tendency: “Kristin was so shy as a kid. She didn’t speak to people and hung on my leg. But then she grew up and become a journalist. Can you believe it? She calls people who don’t want to talk to her.”

Indeed I’m not shy anymore. At least not like that little-girl shy. You still won’t find me in front of a big crowd speaking into a microphone. And while I’m raising a girl who is so much like me, I’m thankful she’s not shy. She’s the kid that talks to strangers when we grocery shop and has to be reminded to tell me good-bye before she gets out of the car at school.

The morale of the story is sometimes people will surprise you. My mom finds joy in me gaining enough confidence to move beyond her leg and be the reporter on the other end of the interview. Clearly I found something better to do with my life than become a gymnast.

So journalist-turned-momma it is.

I really connected with this…I was that girl, too. I was shy all the way to college, and then I slowly found my voice. (And now I can't seem to stop talking…lots of years to make up for, I guess! HA!) I still don't love speaking to a large crowd, but there have been times when I've had to, and He always gives the grace for it. Isn't it amazing what God can do? So thankful for your voice and for your encouragement! Many blessings on your day, friend! 🙂

I adore this, Kristin. You remind me how God sometimes takes an extreme personality trait and turns it into a beautiful attribute. Bravo, friend!

In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, In a week filled with all the parenting emotions, God has provided conversation with friends who understand, new mercies, a few walks and talks with a friend, and cinnamon rolls on a rainy Friday afternoon. I’ve been reminded when we are vulnerable and share our real lives, friends bring truth and goodness — often in ways we don’t expect but bless us anyway.

People ask when I have time to write. The truth is People ask when I have time to write. The truth is I like to make time to write, but sometimes it happens in the cracks of my days — at Panera, in the Notes app on my phone, at the library before I pickup my kids, or while I’m waiting on kids at activities. This week I edited my manuscript while Rachel practiced soccer.

I needed this weekend. The UK Wildcats didn’t I needed this weekend.

The UK Wildcats didn’t win this afternoon like I had hoped. But following our house full of people on Friday night, I’ve spent a lot of time on my couch, under a soft blanket, with a book, while I watch #MarchMadness.

Yesterday I pulled “When We Left Cuba” by @chanelcleeton from my to-be-read stack and then realized it was the second in a series about the Perez family. Thanks to @libby.app, I was able to get “Next Year in Havana” immediately.

I finished it today during commercials and timeouts. And now I’m going to start “When We Left Cuba” as another basketball game also gets going.

I had no idea just how deeply I would be affected I had no idea just how deeply I would be affected while studying Genesis 1-2. Going back to the beginning and seeing how God created, ordered, and filled the earth has been exactly what I didn’t know I needed, especially as a mom.

For quite a while now, I feel like I’ve been living a day at a time. I used to be able to see my life in larger chunks of time and anticipate and prepare accordingly. Now, I slap things on the calendar and then deal with them as they come. Navigating life with two teenagers and a first-grader is the best and hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Honestly, this moment-to-moment living has been good for me and helped me rely on the God who created the stars and rivers that still exist in our world. Focusing on where I am helps me take slower steps, trust God to provide, and remember I’m not in control. I’ve felt an internal shift with my relationships — with my husband, kids, and friends. I’ve felt behind on laundry and dishes and piles of papers. But I’ve also felt a refreshed nearness to God.

I’m going to rest here while believing God created life and light when there was only darkness and continues to order my days.

My friend @ashleelyoung told me about this memoir, My friend @ashleelyoung told me about this memoir, but I knew nothing about Sutton Foster or her story beforehand. She’s a TV actress and Broadway singer and dancer who processes her life — complicated family life, love, loss, spotlight, infertility, adoption, motherhood — by creating. She creates in the kitchen, on stages, with yarn, with paint, with her hands, and with her mind. But her story really is all the experiences and emotions that inspire her creative work. I enjoyed this one.

Yesterday was one of my favorite kids of days with Yesterday was one of my favorite kids of days with some of my favorite friends. Kids played inside and out, the TV was never on, and new memories were made with old friends. Plus we ended the night with our ninth year of Little Hands Trivia Night. It was our worst finish ever, but we still had such a fun time!
